Placid Waters Update:

October, 2008 - The slalom courses are sunk below the ice level for the winter. We normally ski until Thanksgiving, but since Karl is the only skier with the cold tolerance, we took the opportunity to winterize a little early. The water is up to full project level and it continuously going over the weir overflow control.

Karl took an airplane ride and took some photographs of the project. It looks great from the air as well as on the ground. Of course, the best way to experience it is from the water.

In 2009 there will be the Michigan State Championships held at Lake Placid. This will be a good test for the infrastructure. We bought a ramp for ski jump and are in the process of making it ready for world record jump. Anticipating a night jump event, LED lights will be placed both along the ramp edges and under the translucent plastic ramp surface. As far as I know, nobody had done it this way before, so we will have to wait until May 2009 to test it out - that is when I have the SCUBA divers scheduled to return to anchor it down.

If all goes well, the first house should begin construction in November, 2008. The goal is to have it ready for the Spring Parade of Homes.

Keep checking back. After the new year, there will be a big announcement regarding Placid Waters for 2009.

August 16, 2008 - Open House. Please bring along you USA Waterski membershp card and your favorite ski or board. Action Watersports will be on hand with the latest boats and other equipment for a great time on the water.

August 9, 2008 - Slalom tournament. Please see the www.mwsa.org site for more details.

July 17, 2008 - The backtop is now on the streets! Bay 1 and 3 have the slalom courses installed. The ski jump is being finished and should be ready for installation soon.

Placid Waters Phase I is nearing completion. The road is about ready to install and the final utilities are going in soon. Water and sewer have passed their final tests and are ready for use. This summer you should be able to start construction on your new home.

The recent wet weather was a boon to lake levels. We are less than a couple of feet of our full maintenance level and the ground water is seeping in from the north and west. You can see it streaming in on the north side.

Marcus Brown (www.facetoface.com) was there on the first pass through the slalom course on Bay 1. His Face to Face tour came to town because of the MasterCraft Pro Tour on the east side of the state (www.proskiers.com). It was a lot of fun to see the tour bus towing the 40th Anniversary Edition Pro Star 197. Jodi Fisher (www.jodifisher.com) also held a couple of clinics on the lakes. Jamie Beauchesne (www.connellyskis.com) also came by with his new Connelly ski, the Prophecy.

The water has been described as "soft and fast." Of course, I am biased, but I have a lot of fun on the water. We spent a day on Bay 2 boarding as tubing as well. The shoreline works as promised, it absorbed everything a well weighted X-2 could dish out with perfect conditions every run. The water depth is perfect for a clean, crisp lip that almost starts your rotation for you.

If you can come by to see it, please do. If you can bring your board or stick, even better.

As of July, 2007, we are preparing for the installation of the underground utilities. This will be completed in two phases. The first is the off-site utilities that will hook up to the city water and public sewer systems. The second is the on-site utilities (including electrical, cable, fiber, natural gas, water, and sewer).

The first three lakes are nearly complete. Lake 1, the western most lake, has the slalom augers and sub-buoys installed. The pumps will be turned off soon to allow it to fill up. Lakes 2 and 3 need some touch-up work and the service road to be removed.

If all goes well, Wake Drive will be installed before Thanksgiving with the ability to start home construction this fall. That is not a guarantee, it is an optimistic guess at this point in time.

The lakes should be skiable next spring, depending upon snow, rain, and pumping. We took out millions of gallons that need to seep back into the sand layer over time to stabilize the lake level. This will take about a year or so.

This is an exciting time for us. We will begin planning a grand opening event for 2008. Please check this site often for the dates and times. It will be worth attending.
